new painting: Spring Torrent – Resort Creek

on

Hello all,

I hope you are having a fantastic summer. I am but I also have to admit that I am over the heat, mugginess and never-ending pall of wildfire smoke. Luckily the smoke has been pretty minor this summer. All the same, I look forward to cool air and clear skies.

This new painting is also from a cooler, clearer point in the year – late spring. More concisely, it is from that beautiful time in spring when the melt in the village is done and you can start hiking again at village level. The top of the mountains still have some of their snowpack though so local creeks, streams and falls are still raging with run-off. I am always there for the drama of that. If there is something I love seeing, hearing and painting it is rushing water.

This painting is from a lesser known but really lovely tributary into Heffley creek from Tod Mountain called Resort Creek. Now, Resort Creek is largely hidden in a gully that is heavily treed in. Exploring it means risking sprained ankles to climb into the gully and pick through the steep, forested and bouldered banks to try and find those magical places where the sunlight gets in. But if you do, you are in for a treat because the whole thing is literally a waterfall at this time of the year.

Another special thing about this painting is that it was completed in one weekend. I needed it to fill a gap left by a sold painting at the cafe exhibition. I can’t say that such compressed focus and effort is really my preference – but it is nice to know I can produce a finished canvas in under a month if desired. If you are in the village, please come check it out in person at Vertical Cafe. It will be there for another month (unless sold, of course).

Now, onto my next project – a large, complicated scene I’m afraid. I may do mid-painting post (and came up for some air) otherwise you are not likely to hear from me again for awhile.

Thank you for stopping by!

Peggy
