Hello Everyone and happy hike/bike season!
Summer season starts in the resort this weekend and, in typical fashion, I am offering up something new but a few seasons behind (thematically, that is). Fine by me though. All be told, I am not a huge fan of summer. We moved up here in part to escape the heat of the rest of the region. It may also be why I can never seem to paint a summer theme in summer. Too hot. It helps to be painting snow while sweating it out in my studio.
This scene is derived from a visit down the hill in Whitecroft to see what their non-pines look like in that magical mix of fresh snow/still autumn. I was not disappointed. Nor was I disappointed going in close again so I could play with detail on my two tree trunks. I find it so lovely to get right in there and marvel (through paint) at the infinite variety that makes up what we think of as a homogeneous stand of trees… and then take it a bit further with some gentle abstraction. So fun. Mostly. You know… when the whole project was not being frustrating.
Also I should mention that this is another canvas for my little collection showing at a local cafe (Vertical Cafe, if you are a local) this summer. It is not a particularly small painting so I am hoping it doesn’t look too silly or overwhelming in the small, lovely space they have. Mostly though, I am just happy and greatful that there are venues that will show the work of local artists – and especially ones that are otherwise shy of getting their work “out there” into the public space. Vertical is a great supporter of local artists in this sense and our local arts community could not be more greatful. (p.s. if you are in the area my stuff will be there July through mid September (2024).
On to my next wee canvas – last to go in the cafe. Wish me luck. And I wish YOU a happy start to the summer season.
Peggy
